An energy audit is the critical first step before implementing any energy efficiency measures -- the quickest and cheapest way to reduce energy bills and eliminate harmful GHG emissions. However, the industry – as well as federal and state policy – is falling short on multiple fronts. They’re ignoring 5+ million small commercial buildings which represents 88% of all commercial buildings. The available services are far too expensive for many potential customers, and that doesn’t even factor in the lack of knowledge surrounding the importance of energy efficiency and electrification. Plus, energy auditors themselves, as well as clean energy solutions, are concentrated in wealthier, less diverse regions.

To reach even the modest climate goals of the Biden administration and have a shot at keeping climate change to 1.5 degrees celsius (and many other cities and states have more stringent building performance standards), we need to conduct ~25,000 audits per year, which is roughly 25X faster than the current rate. Simply put, the industry is not suited to scale to meet the problem.
